Parents' Association

The Parents' Association, commonly referred to as the PA, is a committee of elected parents. The PA's principal objective is to serve the school in a supportive role and to endeavour to develop a sense of community within the parent body. It is not a decision or policy-making body of the school.

Key to Somerset College's growth and success is the active involvement of our parents. The Senior Parents Association (PA) committee strives to harness the energy and talents of our families to further the interests of Somerset College through:

  • providing an effective communication platform between the PA and parents
  • building connections through events and projects to build the College community spirit
  • making a much-valued contribution through volunteering and fundraising

Therefore, your support of our initiatives benefits our children and staff now and into the future.

THE PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE

The PA’s committee consists of a group of parent volunteers, whose principal objective is to serve the school in a supportive role and to endeavour to develop a sense of community within the parent body. This includes the team of class and grade representatives in the primary and senior schools respectively, who form a vital link between parents and the school. It is not a decision or policy-making body of the school. PA meetings are chaired by an elected Chair.

Once a year, the PA holds an Annual General Meeting (AGM) that summarizes the keynote achievements of the PA for the past year and allows for questions to be put to it by attendees. The PA Chair represents the parent body on the Board of Governors.

PA EVENTS

Our team of volunteers works their magic to bring us wonderful events from arranging College family get togethers to the very successful annual OHAR function. These include:

Family Picnic

The Family Picnic is one to which both primary and senior schools families are invited to celebrate our community and beautiful campus together.  It is usually held in the first term.

Somerset College Lottery

An annual Somerset College lottery offers parents and Old Oaks the opportunity to purchase tickets to stand a chance to win R100 000. Funds raised contribute to the Students Development Unit (SDU), Acorn Bursary Trust (ABT), and Teacher Development Fund (TDF).

OHAR

“Our Hearts Are Red” (OHAR) is an expression of our parents’ living commitment to our school and community. Since 2015, the parents of the Somerset College community have enthusiastically organised an auction and special evening of celebration under the OHAR banner. This joyful, generous gathering of our school reflects our passion, hope, and, most significantly, our collective heart for Somerset College.

Derby days

These fun-sporting events involved different sports matches against other schools. Our moms and dads contribute to adding 'gees' with their tireless pancake and egg/bacon roll making for hungry supporters and sports teams. Parent’s red and blue supporter's gear is also available at our College shop.

Golf and Boules day

The PA support’s the Somerset College annual golf day, traditionally held in October, with the organisation of a friendly Boules competition.

The PA encourages all parents to join the MySchool Programme, as it raises funds for the College without costing parents a cent! Application Form – MySchool Card
